5k Walk/Run for Literacy

October 5, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

7th Annual 5k Walk/Run for Literacy

Saturday, October 5th, 2019
Englewood MetroPark
10:00 a.m.

2019 marks the Brunner Literacy Center’s 7th annual 5k to promote adult literacy education in Dayton!

Join us at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 5th to walk, jog, or run our certified 5k course through beautiful Englewood MetroPark’s West Park to celebrate the joys of literacy, health, and community. Our course begins and ends at the Lawwill Shelter.

Plan to arrive 30-45 minutes early to check in at the registration table, get something to eat or drink, join in some pre-race exercise, listen to music, and visit with friends.

Race Prizes

The three fastest men and women in each age bracket will be awarded medals at our closing ceremonies. Age brackets are divided into these groups:

  • 19 years old and under
  • 20-35 years old
  • 36-50 years old
  • 51-65 years old
  • 66 years old and over

Raffle Prizes

At the end of the race, we like to give away some goodies. Raffle prizes include cash awards of $500, $300, and $200. On top of that, some of our friends and sponsors donate other goodies to be given away. Past years’ prizes have included restaurant gift cards, gas station gift cards, fitness classes, fresh produce from A. Brown & Sons Nursery, and more!

Each 5k participant gets one free raffle ticket with registration. Additional tickets can be purchased at $5 for one (1) ticket and $25 for six (6) tickets. Tickets can be purchased in person at the BLC ahead of time or at the park on the day of the 5k. You do not need to be present to win the cash prizes. All proceeds benefit the BLC.

About the Brunner Literacy Center

Every day at the Brunner Literacy Center, volunteers put learning tools into the hands of adult learners. Administrators, staff, and volunteers work to fulfill the Center’s mission of helping adults learn to read, write, compute, and learn English as a new language. Tutoring and other services, including books and materials, are provided to students without charge.

The BLC is always in need of new volunteers! For more details about our volunteering opportunities, visit our website here to learn more about how you can support Dayton’s adult students.

23 Fundraisers To Support in October!

October 2, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

Dayton long ago earned a reputation for being a city that gives back. According to the history of the Dayton Foundation, NCR founder and Chairman John H. Patterson championed innovative projects for the betterment of the community. Joining him in his enthusiasm was his sister-in-law, Julia Shaw Patterson Carnell, and nephew, Robert Patterson, son of John Patterson’s brother, Capt. Robert Patterson, all active community leaders in their own right. A leading businesswoman, Julia Patterson Carnell helped establish the Dayton Art Institute by donating works of art, a mansion that served as the museum’s first home and $2 million towards the construction in 1930 of its current facility.

Robert Patterson was a senior executive at NCR and a leader in community affairs. He helped to found the local Boy Scouts and the Dayton Rotary Club and was active with the YMCA, Chamber of Commerce and Miami Valley Hospital.

Today there are over 4000 nonprofits in the region, and to continue the legacy of taking care of our community, there are hundreds of fundraising events to support them. To see our complete list of charitable events for 2019 check our DMM calendar.

Dayton Fundraisers to Benefit the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund

August 19, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

A gunman opened fire in Dayton’s Oregon District early on August 4th, killing nine people and wounding at least 3o others.  A horrific event in our beloved entertainment district.  And Dayton reacted how we always do, as a community, joining together to try to help.  I continue to be amazed by the generosity of our town and our ability to open our hearts and wallets to those in need.

Over the last 8 days, dozens of restaurants donated % of sales to the newly created Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund, created by The Dayton Foundation. The Bengals, the Browns and NFL Foundation combined donated $100,000, Macy’s pitched in with $20,000, a one day sale by Esther Price raised over $85,000, the Connor Group donated $100,000 and Lady Gaga funded Donor’s Choice requests for teacher’s here in Dayton as well as El Paso.

Local businesses continue to plan fundraisers and here’s a list of ays you can help:

Clash Dayton

521 E 5th St
Dayton, Ohio 45402

Will be donating the proceeds from our “gem city” merchandise designed by Matt Freeman from the entire month of August. This includes t-shirts and stickers.

Thursday, Aug 22nd 5-9pm
Love Wins!

Trolley Stop 5pm
530 E 5th St, Dayton, Ohio 45402

Trolley Stop is teaming up with SweetWater Brewing Company and Toxic Brew Company to raise funds for The Dayton Foundation‘s Oregon District Victims’ Relief Fund. Brews from Sweetwater and Toxic will be on tap, Sweetwater will match dollars on pints of brews and raffling off lots of goodies. Oh, and we will have delicious snacks for ya too. Join us for an evening of love and hugs and give back to those in need. We love this city and we love you. #daytonstrong

Thursday, Aug 22nd,  7-10pm
Bingo & Beer!
Lucky’s Taproom & Eatery

We are teaming up with 6 breweries for a night of bingo and beer to help raise funds for the Dayton Foundation. We will have 6 rounds of bingo, each round called by a brewery rep with some awesome prizes! In addition there will be raffle baskets galore and $2 of every pint of beer sold will be donated. Bingo cards will be $1 buy in each (no limit on how many you buy) and raffle tickets will be 1 for $5 or 5 for $20.

Breweries participating: MadTree, Fat Head’s, Bell’s, Hi-Wire, Fifty West, Rhinegiest

After all is said in done we will be matching ALL donations raised from the evening.

Friday, Aug 23rd,  7pm – 2:3oam
Flanagan’s Toxic Brew Beer Release Fundraiser
1o1 Stewart street

Flanagan’s Pub & Toxic Brew Company have been planning a beer team up and release party for awhile. In light of the senseless violence that erupted in our town in the early morning hours of Aug 4, we want to turn it into an opportunity to get some of your hard earned beer budget to the people who really need it. Flanagan’s will donate $1 for every pint of the new collab beer sold during the launch party, and Toxic will match it, and the money will go to The Dayton Foundation‘s Oregon District Victims Fund.

Tuesday, Aug 27th,  5– 10pm
Oregon District Spend-a-Thon

Dayton’s Oregon District is comprised almost entirely of small, local, independent businesses that rarely have the funds to fall back on when forced to close for multiple days. Your patronage directly supports your neighbors most affected by August 4’s tragedy.

Come get dinner, drinks, a hat, an album – there’s so much to do, all thanks to our wonderful small businesses and the owners and workers that operate them! There will be live music playing at many spots throughout the district, donating their time for tips for the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy fund.

Tuesday, Aug 27th, 6– 8pm
Greater Dayton Mugs of Hope

Paintbrush Pottery | Springboro

Decoy Art Center | Beavercreek

Cornell Studio Supply | North Dayton

Front Street | Downtown Dayton

A creative, therapeutic event for Daytonians.

We’re paying it forward with a message of love and hope.

Arrive to the location at 6 pm on Tuesday, August 27th. All supplies are provided along with instruction – but the creativity is up to you! Every mug will be cohesive with a Greater Dayton Mugs of Hope logo that will be pre-screened on each. 500 mugs will be painted during this event.  There is a $5 registration fee to hold your seat that will be donated to a charitable organization selected by the location you are attending.

Afterwards, we will fire them in our kilns. The mugs will be food-safe and ready for daily use. To continue the community atmosphere, we will be going to various locations in the Greater Dayton region to pass out the completed mugs, as well as few “grand prize” items such as gift cards from local businesses. Each Mug of Hope will be handed to a complete stranger, so the painter of the mug will not receive their mug back. This concept is intentional. We want the community to feel connected, not by tragedy, but through hope. Write a message on the bottom of you mug and follow us at #DaytonMugsofHope. You, too, can pick up a mug of your own by another Daytonian!

Wednesday, Aug 28th,  6– 11pm

5 Fabulous Fundraisers in February

February 2, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

The fact that Dayton was recognized on the Travelocity list of  25 Most Giving Cities in the U.S. is no surprise to us at MostMetro.com.  Having put together the most comprehensive list of charity events in the region for the last 10 years, we’ve seen how many people are willing to give back and help others in this community.   We’ve got a list of area fish fry’s that make a difference to so many and each week, Fifth Street Brewpub allows different non-profits to guest bartend each Monday to raise funds and Old Scratch Pizza has  Cones for a Cause Program that has raised over $20,000 dollars for area charity’s in the past year and Warped Wing Brewery  and Milano’s are just a couple  of the  local businesses that have established fundraising programs.

It’s hard to choose which events to support each month, but here are suggestions for February Fundraisers:

A Special Wish Foundation Annual Valentines Dance

Friday, February 9 @ 7 pm – 11:30 pm  $150/person

A Special Wish Foundation – Dayton has been making special wishes come true for local children for over 30 years. These wishes wouldn’t be possible without the continued generosity of the community. I ask you to join ASW and continue to give local wish kids and their families’ memories that will last a lifetime.

The 13th Annual Valentines Dance benefiting The Dayton Chapter of A Special Wish Foundation is the area’s only wish-granting organization!  This fun and unique event will be held at the Wright State University Nutter Center on Friday, February 9th, 2018.
