“Fleurs et Vin” Festival will feature over 400 wines for tasting !

Get ready to raise your wine glass this Sunday at Carillon Park , because Dayton’s premier wine and gourmet food festival arrives!!

That’s right, the one and only shindig known as “FLEURS ET VIN” (flowers and wine in French) takes place this weekend!

This is a Food Adventure and Wine extravaganza that you don’t want to miss.  The Big Ragu will be there in full force!

WHERE: At Historic Carillon Park,  1000 Carillon Blvd.  Dayton, Ohio 45409

Fleurs Et Vin: A Great Success at Carrillon Park

Did you miss it?  Endless wine tasting and all the food samplings you wanted were featured at the 2013 Fleurs et Vin Festival held at Carillon Park on May 19th.  The Big Ragu was on hand with Dayton Most Metro’s staff, greeting the massive crowds and sample the various offerings.  It was a Food Adventure paradise in the heart of Dayton, and a must eat on our list of events.

Here’s the Skinny:

— FLEURS ET VIN is Dayton’s Premier Wine and Gourmet Food Festival, typically held each year on a Sunday in May from 1-4pm under the tents at Carrillon Historical Park.  It is an all-you-want tasting event with a loyal following.

— ALL of the food and wine was donated by locally owned restaurants, allowing 100% of the proceeds to benefit AIDS Resource Center of Dayton.  A Food Adventure with a cause

— Admission price allowed you access to over 400 wines from around the world and taste menu samples from 20 local restaurants, along with a Belgian Beer Garden area !

— Live and Silent Auction areas allowed even more funds to be raised for this worthy cause that focuses of prevention and education about AIDS, along with service programs that help those in need with HIV/AIDS.

— Live music filled the air and added to the warm ambiance.

With so many good wines and so much good food, below are our picks for the best of the best from this spectacular event!

Crab Rangoon from Thai 9.  Our Favorite Rangoon in Dayton.

OUR FAVORITES  (THE FOOD):

Thai 9’s Crab Rangoon and Chicken with Rice:  In our opinion, the best crab rangoon in the Dayton area were these incredible samples from Thai9.  Stuffed full and deep, and served with a sweet side of Thai sauce, we found ourselves returning to this line often.  The Thai chicken dish was also incredible at this station.  It was a Thai pepper chicken, served in a brown, curry house sauce over a bed of white rice.  We told them we loved it, but our mouths were so full that they couldn’t understand us.

The Dock’s Crab Cakes:  Slowly seared on their portable flat top grill, these were flavorful, hand-packed circles of love.  The sauce that topped the crab cakes was the secret ingredient that kept us coming back for more.  The staff of The Dock probably wanted to file a restraining order against us for hanging out by their grill as much as we did.  We could not resist seconds of these scrumptious bites of crab heaven.

Hawthorn Grill’s  Sorbet and Strawberry ShortCake: All of the desserts at Hawthorn Grill are homemade by Chef Candace and her staff.   Her sorbet was a perfect, refreshing break during this hot event.  The bite size piece of cake, topped with a strawberry sauce also hit the spot.

Scratch Catering’s Beef Brisket and Carmelized Onion Bruschetta:  When doesn’t Chef Matt Hayden please the hungry crowds?  This delicious, slow-cooked sampling was just as pleasing to the eye, as it was to our taste buds.  The hits from Scratch Catering just keep on coming ….

OUR FAVORITES (THE WINES):

Canella Blood Orange Mimosa:  Talk about refreshing!   This tasty, bottled mimosa was the perfect drink, on this hot day.  The server at this booth had to be tired of us by the end of the event.   Probably our favorite offering from the Vintage Wine Distributor.  This Italian wine cocktail is made from grape wine and the juice and pulp of blood oranges from Sicily.

Heron Chardonnay:  A crisp, white wine made from 22 year old grape vines.  The winery is a female owned, family vineyard run by Laely Heron.   One of the few American women who made wine in France, Heron’s products are also produced in California.

Spreitzer Riesling 101:  This German Riesling comes from a winery owned by two brothers who have been honing their craft since 1997.  It was a cold, refreshing sip of sparkling goodness in the warm weather.

The Belgian Beer Garden: Although this was a wine festival, Heidelberg Distributing distracted us with some great beer selections.  Food Adventures enjoyed a couple of  Stella Artois beers in a souvenir pint.  The Big Ragu went for some Hoegaarden beer and an Ommegang Witte Beer.

All in all, this is Dayton’s “Wine me and dine me” Festival.  We loved being a part of a wonderful event, that supported a locally based AIDS charity.  Good local food and world class wines, what more could one ask for?   So let us end this Food Adventure, by raising our glass with a toast.. “Whether you love Merlot or Chardonnay, here’s to seeing you at Fleurs et Vin, next May!!”

Dayton Beer Week

Dayton Beer Week 2012! August 18th - 24th! Our Festivus!

Next Saturday, August 25th, Dayton will mark the 14th time AleFest has been celebrated, and it has been picking up steam every year. Three hundred and fifty breweries are participating in the event taking place at Carillon Historical Park. It is the main event in an escalating series of beer celebrations around town that makes up Dayton Beer Week, August 18th – 24th. This is the week that every craft beer aficionado should be going out and looking to expand their palate. It would be harder for you this week to find a place that is NOT offering some sort of beer event.

There are going to be beer tastings, dinners, tappings, specials, and education all week long in the widest variety of venues. Places better known for wine or other spirits will be getting into the act, like the Century Bar, Thai 9, A Taste of Wine, Buckin’ Donkey BBQ, and Bruning’s Wine Shop. Beer dinners will be offered all around town to help improve your food and beer pairings at Rue Dumaine, Jay’s Seafood Restaurant, Dorothy Lane Market, Spinoza’s Pizza & Salads, Meadowlark, The Melting Pot, and Jimmie’s Ladder 11. Representatives from Samuel Adams, Stone Brewing Company, Duvel USA, Brewkettle, New Holland, Magic Hat, 21st Amendment, Goose Island, Sierra Nevada Brewery, and Unibroue will be in town to talk about their beers as well as show off some of their new products. All of the dates and times for these tastings are available on our event calendar under beer.

The festivities for the week officially begin on Sunday evening, August 19th, with the Beer Pride Parade, starting at the Dublin Pub. Line up through the Oregon District and show your craft beer pride!  The over 800 owners of the new Fifth Street Brewpub Co-op are invited to a pre-parade event and will walk in the parade en masse.  The first eighty bicycle riders to Biking for The Beer Of It in Miamisburg can participate in a nice ten mile ride on Tuesday, August 21st, sponsored by Goose Island. There will be some refreshments at the mid way point, and a little bit of swag for all of the participants. Five chefs and six beers will be featured on Wednesday, August 22nd, at the Dayton Art Institute’s Brewer’s Art dinner. Space is limited for this event, so you are going to want to make your reservations soon! Of course, the final event, the culmination of a week’s worth of fun and tasting and exploring is AleFest.

For fourteen years, this has been THE beer event in Dayton.

While you are out exploring Dayton, there are a few things you should remember as you are out doing your tastings:

  • When you taste, it is very similar to tasting wine. You want a little foam on the top. You also want to look at and sniff the beer before you taste it, to see what aromas are coming off of it.
  • Do not hold the beer in direct light when you look at it. You get the best idea of color when you look at it in indirect light.
  • Give it a little bit of a swirl in your glass. This stirs up the carbonation a little, allowing more of the aromas to be released. Don’t underestimate the importance of scent when tasting your beer!
  • Hold the beer in your mouth a little bit, allowing it to roam all over your tongue. Enjoy the flavors that come out as it is in your mouth. Take a mental note on how thick the beer is. This is known as mouthfeel.
  • Allow the beer to warm up SLIGHTLY before you drink it. As with wine, a little bit of extra warmth unveils deeper flavors that may not be otherwise obvious.

And while you are going to Beer Week events:

  • Car pool. Parking is going to be very limited for some of these events, and the citizens are going to be out in force. Getting more people in one car is going to be helpful for everyone.
  • Get there early. You want to make sure you get there in enough time to get seats, be able to talk to the guest of honor, etc. Some events may even have limited seating. Make sure you call the venue and check out the details.
  • Drink plenty of water. This is going to serve a twofold purpose. First, water will help cleanse the palate between each beer, giving you a better idea of how each beer tastes. Secondly, it will help you avoid a worse hangover than you might normally have.
  • Do not eat spicy foods before you go to an event. You do not want your taste buds to be still burning from the Nuclear Hot wings you just ate. Eat a little something; just tone it down.
  • Go to the dark side. If you are not at a pre-set beer tasting, start off with some of the lighter beers, and go to the darker ones. The darker beers tend to have heavier flavors and be thicker, which can linger a little longer.
  • Designate a driver. No explanation needed.

Next week is going to be an exciting romp through the world of craft beer. Check out the list and plan you week carefully, participate in a few a events, and try out a few beers you have never thought about before, or may not get a chance to again. Beer, Food & Fun at the GermanFest Picnic!

The Dayton Liederkranz know how to throw a party.   This year’s GermanFest Picnic, held  August 10th -12th was no exception.  The festival was hosted by the German Club, to promote and preserve German culture and traditions in the Miami Valley, and it was a playground for your favorite Dayton foodies, the Food Adventure Crew.   The 29th annual event included food, drink, kids areas,  and a 5k event.  Having German roots in both of our Food Adventure families, we appreciated the genealogy assistance area for help with your family tree

We strolled the grounds looking for craft beers and food booths.  We enjoyed tasting various German treats, after all it is our heritage.  Our favorite snack of the day was the Weinerschnitzel Sandwich, which is pretty much a fried pork cutlet.  The tasty treat was topped with onions, sauerkraut, mustard and more.  Some of our favorite beers offered included Paulaner, Widmer Brothers HefeWeizen, and Hofbrau Dunkel.

Food vendors also served authentic root beer, and local restaurant Smokin BBQ was in attendance.  Culp’s Cafe had a presence at the festival serving sweet potato fries and various burger options.  Ullery’s Ice Cream was making handmade ice cream on site.  There were numerous other food vendors and we took our time to explore each one.  Near some of the no-food vendor tents we even met the owner of  Miss Riley’s Cookies.  Her almond flavored, highly decorated cookies hit the spot!

Another attraction of this festival was the recognition of German influence on Dayton history.  Inside the Museum lobby, their were displays of Beer history around the Miami Valley as well as local author Curt Dalton who was displaying his historical novels about the Dayton area.

What is a German Fest without Pretzels ?

At each corner of Carillon Park we tried German Beers and a German Potato Sundae.  The cinnamon almond roasted nuts were fantastic, and the aroma from thje grilled Bavarian Pork Chops filled the entire festival.  From pretzels to dried sausages that tasted like beef jerky, the German Fest Picnic is a Food Adventure for the whole family.   The Big Ragu even received a massage at a vendor booth.  An Italian getting a massage from a Thai woman at a German festival.. only in Dayton.  Make sure you visit this annual event, just follow the lederhosen.

Meet Culp’s Cafe’s Chef Jose

Chef Jose Calzada is originally from Chicago.  He graduated with a culinary degree from Kendall College and spent a lot of his early years in the kitchen at Italian and French eateries. He took over as Executive Chef  at Culp’s Café at Carillon Park last year. The historic restaurant was originally opened in 1902 by Charlotte Gilbert Culp, a young widow with six children, began baking and selling bread, cakes and rolls by having her children go door to door in their West Third Street neighborhood. Soon they had a stand at the South Main Street market with the “Culp’s Cake” being a best seller. Her eldest son, Howard Gilbert Culp, leased space in the Arcade, and expanded the business selling poultry, eggs, cheese, and dill pickles at three lunch counters where downtown workers could purchase a complete lunch for 35 cents!

 

In the 1930s, the Culps opened a cafeteria in the Arcade across from Keith Theater. The cafeteria specialized in home-

cooked food and was famous for its pies and pastries. Dayton’s population boomed in the 1940s and Culp’s cafeteria served as many as 5,000 customers a day. Culp’s was the first restaurant in Dayton to have air conditioning and the first electric Hammond organ in the area.  As the downtown area changed due to the development of suburbs and the popularity of television, the Culp family reluctantly sold the business in 1960.

The spirit of this family-operated restaurant lives on at Carillon Historical Park with Chef José Calzada managing Culp’s Café 7 days a week and working daily with his wife Carol. Starting June 2nd Culp’s Cafewill be serving up breakfast, Sat – Mon from 7:30am-3:00pm. They are also open for lunch Tues- Fri 11am – 3pm.  Culp’s is located at 1000 Carillon Blvd, at Carillon Park.

And now Chef Jose answers DaytonDining’s 10 questions:

 What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?

I love to cook with fresh herbs, like Oregano, Thyme, Rosemary and  especially Basil – I love the taste and the smell of it. Using fresh herbs brings out a better flavor on soups, meats and sauces.

What ingredient do you dread?

I really dread working with kale I don’t like the taste and the smell. If I had to use it I would only use it as a garnish.  No offense to kale lovers.

What’s your favorite dish to make? 

I love to make soups, a nice chicken noodle soup or corn chowder on a cold day or a chilled avocado soup with fresh crab meat on a  hot summer day .  10 or 15 years  ago I would have said pates or terrines . When I first started cooking I used to love making duck liver pate and vegetable or meat  terrines.

What’s your favorite pig out food?

I love cheeseburgers, here in Dayton I like to go to Smashburger. My favorite place to go for a burger is Illinois Bar and Grill in Chicago , their one pound burgers are the best I have ever had.

What restaurant, other then your own do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?

My wife and I love to go to Tony’s Italian Kitchen on North Main Street in Englewood, it is a very small neighborhood  restaurant with great food, but most of all authentic. We have tried everything on the menu and we are always satisfied.

What’s your best advice for home chefs?

Have fun doing what you love!  Like one of my chef instructors would always say  “It is not rocket science, just have fun and enjoy it!”

If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?

I wouldn’t know were to start there are a lot of people to choose from like by brother who passed away 12 years ago, my mentors Chef John Hogan and Chef Mike Greagson. There are also my chef instructors, my collies, my favorite athletes and actors and actresses . It would be very hard to just pick 4 guests.

Who do you look up in the industry and why?

I look up to a lot of people in this industry, from a chef I have had the pleasure to know like, Priscilla Satkof, who has been one of the top female chefs in Chicago for over 15 years, Michel Coatrieux who is a chef instructor for over 25 years,  Georges “Kiki” Cuisance who has been in the restaurant business for over 35 years and still doing a great job. To the celebrity chefs like Gordon Ramsay, Emeril Lagasse who have educated  many people about food.

 What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off ?

In my day off I like to spend as much time with my family as I can,  in this business you don’t have many days off.  So we go to the movies, out to dinner or just to the park.

Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story.

The best time I had ever had in the kitchen was when we cooked a dinner for Julia Child  and a group of friends. I was working at Kiki’s Bistro as a sous chef  at the time. The chef and I prepared a 5 course dinner for them with the main entrée of Roasted Squab ( that’s what she order in advance). After the dinner the waiter came to the kitchen and said that she wanted to meet the chefs who prepared  the wonderful meal. That was one of the best feelings I ever had as a chef  – cooking and meeting  someone I idolized growing up, and a person I watched on TV.  It was an experience I will never forget.

Food Adventures: Making History at Culp’s Cafe

Culp’s Amazing Pot Roast

One of Dayton’s best kept secrets is Culp’s Cafe located at the Carillon Historical Park.  The original Culp’s Cafe was started in the kitchen of Charlotte Gilbert Culp who sold breads and baked good out of her West Third Street home.  When downtown Dayton boomed in the 1940’s, The Culps opened a cafe by the Arcade building serving homemade food to about 5,000 customers per day.  During the 1960’s, people began moving to the suburbs forcing the Culp’s to sell their beloved cafe due to declining sales.  Culp’s Cafe is alive again thanks in part to Carillon Park and Chef Jose Calzada who puts his modern touches on nostalgic home cooking.  If you are looking for good, homemade food set in a beautiful atmosphere, then Culp’s Cafe is the place to be.

Culp’s Cafe celebrated St. Patrick’s day offering a menu consisting of traditional Irish favorites.  As soon as we heard about this, we knew we had to attend as guest of Chef Jose and the Dayton Historical Society.  The menu included a three-course lunch for $11.75.  The entrees were Irish classics: Fish and Chips, Sheperd’s Pie, and Corned Beef with Cabbage.  The desserts were just as festive including such tasty treats as Irish Cream Chocolate Mousse Cake, Chocolate Guiness Goodness, and a White and Dark Chocolate Bread Pudding with Irish Cream Sauce.

Our appetizers were brought to the table by a server decked out in a traditional 1940’s waitress uniform.  (Imagine a gray version of the uniform worn by Flo at Mel’s Diner.)  This really brings a nostalgic vibe to Culp’s Cafe!  We were served a simple, refreshing salad and a cup of hearty potato soup.  The soup was the tasty kind your mom used to make, but Chef Jose throws in a little bacon and cheese for added flavor.  We loved our appetizers and waited eagerly for our entrees to arrive!

Our friendly server, Carol, brought out our Fish and Chips and Corned Beef with Cabbage.  The Big Ragu is the known as the “King of Fried Foods” and naturally ordered the Fish and Chips served with a side of house-made Cole Slaw made with pineapple and poppy seeds.  We ordered the Corned Beef with Cabbage.  The dish consisted of three large pieces of Corned Beef that resembled the tongue of Kiss’ Gene Simmons.  (If you don’t understand that reference, we suggest that you Google ‘Gene Simmons Tongue.’)  The cabbage was tender and the Corned Beef was flavorful.  The Big Ragu even took a bite of the Corned Beef — an amazing feat if you’re familiar with the issues Ragu has with certain meat textures.  Too bad we didn’t photograph this part of our dinner…the facial expression was classic.  The Corned Beef with Cabbage was also served with boiled red potatoes leaving little room for dessert!

As we were waiting for our desserts, we thought we would entertain our fellow diners with our interpretation of “River Dancing”.  Fortunately, we left our tights and curly-haired wigs at home.  As the desserts arrived, our eyes got about as big as our bellies!  The Big Ragu ordered the Irish Cream Mousse Cake — a nice, light way to end the meal.  We ordered the Bread Pudding which we quickly devoured.  The Big Ragu makes pretty good bread puddings, but Culp’s Bread Pudding puts ours to shame.  Chef Jose took it to a whole new level by adding Dark and White Chocolate!  After all of this food, we were feeling “extra heavy”.  We feared the only way we could leave the cafe would be for someone to kindly roll us out to our car!

The Irish Feast was amazing and we appreciate Chef Jose and Elise Hafenbrack from Dayton Historical Society for inviting us to be a part of this great event.  Culp’s Cafe is open seven days a week from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.  Some of the other dishes we highly recommend are the Reuben, Grilled Basil Chicken Sandwich, Original Culp’s Cake, and that amazing Pot Roast.  Culp’s Cafe takes you back to the long lost era of good, homemade comfort food set in one of the most scenic dining rooms in Dayton.  We encourage you to visit Carillon Historical Park and take pride in Dayton History and enjoy a great meal at Culp’s Cafe.

Daylight Savings Time is this coming weekend.  As we spring forward, we’ll all have one less hour to have fun, so that just means you’ll have to be more efficient in packing as much fun as you can into the week!  To help save some time, I’ve done some of the planning for you!

On Wednesday, find out what Skype is by heading to Welcome to the World of Skype at The Learning Center at Miami Valley Research Park.  This is a perfect way to connect with a friend or loved one who lives far away.  Speaking of connections, if you work or volunteer for a non-profit, you will want to attend 19 Ways to Use Social Media to Connect With Your Donors at the Dayton Metro Library’s main branch.  Sick of cooking the same old meatloaf?  Attend the Cooking Class: Small Plates From Around the World at the Greene County Career Center to “spice” things up!  Or, learn the basics at UD’s ArtStreet for Basic Cooking Skills with Jim Owens.  It’s only $10 for community members!  At the Trolley Stop, be sure to not drink too liberally for the Drinking Liberally – Dayton event, in which you will be able to discuss politics with others who are interested in the topic.  If drinking makes you drowsy, then get some caffeine and make your way to the Victoria Theatre to see The Drowsy Chaperone.

On Thursday, head to the PNC 2nd Street Market for the Fresh Summer Wrap Demo.  Afterwards, you will be able to fix your own for lunch.  Make reservations to attend the Mardi Gras Creole Wine Dinner over at the delicious McCormick & Schmick’s.  At A Taste of Wine, attend their 2 Cheeses & A Chocolate Fondue Wine Tasting.  Join other young professionals in the Dayton region at the Generation Dayton Thirsty Thursday at Harrigan’s in Kettering.  And if you would like to see some very talented young dancers, head to Wright State for their Dance Concert 2011.

Carroll Fish Fry

On Friday, eat some of the amazing pizza at Oregon Express as part of their Half-Price Pizzas.  Attend the first fish fry that is officially in Lent – the Carroll High School 26th Annual Alumni Irish Fish Fry.  Looking for a historically accurate, multi-course dinner from the 19th century?  Attend the Tavern Dinners: End of Winter Feast at Carillon Historical Park…I’m hoping that “historically accurate” does not mean that the food itself is well over a hundred years old.  If you find that you’re tickled pink, head to Pinkalicious-The Musical at Town Hall Theatre.  Other theater options include the Xenia Area Community Theatre’s Old Time Radio Show II at the Kettering Health Network Theatre, Beyond Therapy at the Dayton Playhouse, Little Women at Wright State University, Mid-Life, The Crisis Musical at Beavercreek Community Theatre, and The Drowsy Chaperone at Victoria Theatre.  All you Celtic music lovers should make plans to see the band Solas as they perform at Kuss Auditorium.  And if you love the Dayton Philharmonic, be sure to get tickets to see Russian Giants at the Schuster Center.

On Saturday, there will be great things going on at the PNC 2nd Street Market.  Take the kids so they can enjoy the Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss celebration.  Also, while there, join in the festivities as it is also St. Patrick’s Day at the Market!  There will be live Irish music as well as Irish dance demonstrations.  While you’re downtown, be sure to head to Fifth Third Field for the Dragons Box Office Opening so that you can get the best tickets for the season!  For all those who would like to learn how to sew, register for the Workshop: Do-It-Yourself Sewing at the Dayton Art Institute.  I definitely would benefit as I can’t sew worth a darn!  All you artist wannabes will want to attend the Saturday Art Classes at K12 Gallery for Young People.  If you know a teenager, encourage him/her to attend the Boonshoft’s shamROCK 2011, for an evening of live music, dancing, laser tag, prizes, and much more!  There are a wide variety of theater options, including The Drowsy Chaperone (Victoria Theatre), Pinkalicious, The Musical at Town Hall Theatre, Old Time Radio Show II at the Kettering Health Network Theater, Beyond Therapy at Dayton Playhouse, Little Women at Wright State University, and Mid-Life, The Crisis Musical at Beavercreek Community Theatre.  If you love black tie events, you will want to attend the Opera Guild of Dayton’s 2011 Opera Ball, whose theme this year Come Fly with Me.  The event will take place at the Wright Brothers Airport.  Have a wonderful time at Cars & Cabernet, a fundraiser to benefit the Epilepsy Foundation of Western Ohio.  It will be an evening of fine wine, delicious hors d’oeuvres, and exquisite automobiles!  If you’d prefer a more low-key evening that will support a “God” cause, attend the Holy Trinity Fish Fry.  Some musical options for Saturday include The Bluegrass Blowout featuring The Special Consensus at Centerville Schools Performing Arts Center and the Dayton Philharmonic’s Russian Giants at the Schuster Center.  And if you love dance, be sure to attend the Dance Concert 2011 at the Schuster Center.

On Sunday, make time to catch one of the shows you didn’t have an opportunity to see earlier in the weekend:  Beyond The Drowsy Chaperone - Victoria Theatre Associaiton / Human Race Theatre Co. - March 8-20, 2011Therapy (Dayton Playhouse), Little Women (Wright State), The Drowsy Chaperone (Victoria Theatre), Mid-Life, The Crisis Musical (Beavercreek Community Theatre), Old Time Radio Show (Xenia Area Community Theatre at Kettering Health Network Theater), or Pinkalicious, The Musical (Town Hall Theatre).  Want to get out in the great outdoors?  Learn the Fundamentals of Skating at RiverScape.  If you’re a write and prefer to stay indoors, attend Books & Co.’s Second Sunday Free Writers’ Workshop–How To Break Into Publishing.  And finally, watch some amazing dance performances at Wright State’s Dance Concert 2011.

Jane’s Best Bets (12/15 – 12/19)

If you had one, I hope you enjoyed your 2-hour delay or day off due to the snow this week!  If not, I’m sorry!  There are again lots of things to do this week, so even if jackfrost is nipping at your nose, don’t make it a big deal…bundle up and get out of that house!

On Wednesday, start the day at Taco Bell for Free Breakfast Wednesday. At lunchtime, there are several events going on downtown.  You will be able to hear yuletide carols being sung by a choir if you attend the Dayton Holiday Festival’s Noontime Entertainment or the Noonday Carol Singat Westminster Presbyterian Church.  If you work or volunteer for a non-profit, you’ll want to attend Results Now for Nonprofits at the main branch of the Dayton Metro Library.  The colors of Christmas are red and green, so get in half of that spirit by attending the ‘Green’ Social Networking event at Franco’s.  For you winos, attend the Wine Tasting at Dorothy Lane Market or the Weekly Wine Tastingat The Wine Gallery.  If you’re a beero, attend the Mt Camel Beer Tastingat A Taste of Wine in Miamisburg.  At the Spaghetti Warehouse, attend their Mayhem & Mystery Dinner Theatre ‘Hollywood Holiday’…if it’s too scary, you will find it hard to sleep tonight.  For you corny folk like me, attend the Customer Appreciation Christmas Partyat Barleycorn’s, where it will be happy hour all day and there will be visits and gifts from Santa. And finally on Wednesday, at The Loft Theatre, attend 8-Track: The Sounds of the ’70s or catch The Wonder Bread Years at Victoria Theatre.

On Thursday, visit Santa at the PNC Second Street Market.  Again at your lunch hour, attend the Dayton Holiday Festival’s Noontime Entertainment going on downtown.  If you are a young professional who lives/works north of town, join HYPE (Helping Young Professionals Emerge) at The Caroline as part of their Third Thursday.  In order to try a new beer or two, attend the Sierra Nevada Celebration at Spinoza’s or the Christmas Beer Dinner at Thai 9.  I’m talking to you about beer, so I’m offering this simple phrase:  Don’t drink and drive.  Over at the Dayton Art Institute, watch as the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company Presents African Americans in American Life.  While there, take advantage of their Free Third Thursdays.  Or crank out some tunes by attending Karaoke with DJ Carlat Therapy Café.

On Friday, there are many options for your lunch hour.  If you would like to have lunch with an awesome group of young professionals, RSVP to the wonderful Andy Hickey and attend Generation Dayton’s 4th Friday lunchat Rue Dumaine (it’s actually the third Thursday this month because of Christmas!).  Or, attend Bach’s Lunch feat. Carillon Brass, a band of brass instrument musicians, whose members are all part of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra.  Plus, the concert is absolutely FREE!  According to my schedule, fish fry season doesn’t officially start until the Holy Angels fish fry in January, but you don’t have to wait that long for a little fish as you’ll be able to have an All You Can Eat Fish Dinnerat Romer’s Bar and Grill. For those of us who still need to finish our Christmas shopping, we’re in luck as there is a Holiday Bazaar at Valeria’s Beauty Center and Day Spa.  Don’t feel like cooking?  Attend the Christmas Candlelight Dinner at the Dayton Woman’s Club.  Or attend the December Wine and Food Extravaganzaat Kroger Fresh Fare.  I looked at the menu and it sounds absolutely amazing, as there are many foods whose names I don’t know how to pronounce!  To burn off all those calories, grab your ice skates and head over to RiversScape for their DJ Skate: Holiday and Top 40.  Or if you feel like just kicking back, consider purchasing tickets to one of the many shows going on in the area, including Junie B. Jones; Jingle Bells, Batman Smells at Town Hall Theatre, The Nutcrackerat the Schuster Center, 8-Track: The Sounds of the ’70s at The Loft Theatre, Christmas Belles at the Dayton Playhouse, the The Wonder Bread Years at Victoria Theatre, or Irving Berlin’s White Christmasat La Comedia.

Plan to make Saturday a day with your kids…or at least part of it.  And if you’re like me and don’t have any kids, you can just act like one, or perhaps give somebody’s parents a break and borrow one.  (My mom said she wished somebody would borrow me.  Yep, she actually said that…luckily followed by a just kidding!)  So with kid/s in tow, attend Breakfast with Santa at Carillon Park or stop by the PNC 2nd Street Market as Santa Visits the Market, where he has probably loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh!   While there, drop off your non-perishable items for Food for Friends.  In addition to helping those who are less fortunate, you’ll also be setting a great example for the little ones!  You can then visit the Wonderland Windows and do a little shopping at The Tike’s Shop, which are both at the Schuster Center.  At Kettering Tower, check out Virginia Kettering’s Holiday Train Display.  A little later, take those kiddos to The Neon to watch ‘The Grinch’ as part of their Family Movie Series.  Looking for a pet?  Consider attending the Iams Home 4 the Holiday Pet Adopt-a-thon Event.

There are many other options for Saturday as well!  If you’d like to see a show, consider seeing Christmas Belles at the Dayton Playhouse, The Wonder Bread Years at Victoria Theatre, The Nutcrackerat the Schuster Center, Junie B. Jones; Jingle Bells, Batman Smells at Town Hall Theatre, or 8-Track: The Sounds of the ’70s at the Loft Theatre.  Help to make the season bright by attending the Musica! Christmas Seasonal Concertat Fairhaven Church.  I have heard that Musica! has been working hard to put on a great performance!  All you “Flyer Faithful” will want to be at the UD Arena as the Flyers take on Western Carolina.  And although I have never been to one, you can also attend The Mu Crew Christmas Drag Showto benefit the AIDS Resource Center…there might not be folks dressed up like eskimos, but I am sure they will be wearing some interesting clothes!  I didn’t mean for it to, but that sort of rhymed…I guess I’m a poet and didn’t even know it.

On Sunday, have a Victorian Christmas Brunch at the Dayton Woman’s Club. You will also have the opportunity to take your child to the Schuster Center to have Some-Fun, see the Wonderland Windows display, and shop at The Tike’s Shop…I’m sure there will be lots of tiny tots with their eyes all aglow!  If you love architecture, then you will definitely want to attend the Architectural Church Tour which will take you through four different churches built in the late 19th/early 20th century.  This shuttled tour is 100% free!  If you didn’t get a chance to see Musica! perform on Saturday night, consider checking them out at the Lutheran Church of our Savior for their Christmas Seasonal Concert.  And for some theater options, go to the Dayton Playhouse to see Christmas Belles, the Victoria Theatre for The Wonder Bread Years, the Schuster Center for The Nutcracker, Town Hall Theatre for Junie B. Jones; Jingle Bells, Batman Smells, La Comedia for Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, or The loft Theatre for 8-Track: The Sounds of the ’70s.  And if you would like somebody to hit your funny bone, see Latin Kings of Comedy- Alex Reymundo at Dayton Funny Bone.  I have two funny bones, but I think Dayton only has one.

Tis The Season To Dine with Santa

If your children cannot stop talking about Santa Claus, you are not alone.  That’s why restaurants all over town have put together some special opportunities  to allow your kids to meet one of Santa’s helpers.

But here’s a tip for you.  Don’t spring Santa on them. Let your child know they are going to meet a very special visitor. Ask them what they think Santa will wear and talk about how he has a big beard.  Sometimes children will feel more secure of they have siblings or friends accompanying them, however you are the best gauge of your child’s needs.  And be sure and have fresh batteries in the camera!

Dayton’s Premier Wine & Gourmet Food Festival returns

The original “Party in the Park” was the brain child of two friends, Vail Miller Sr. of Heidelberg and Mike Frank of Arrow Wine.  With a mission of bringing wine out of just the wine cellars and homes of people to the general public, the idea of a wine festival was born.  Now 19 years later, Fleurs et Vin is the most anticipated, talked about and attend wine event in the Miami Valley.

On Sunday, May 23 from 1- 4pm, wine connoisseurs and novices alike will sample the best wines from around the world while enjoying culinary treats from top independent restaurants in the region-click here to see the lineup. The $60 advance admission ticket ($70 at the park) will allow you to to choose from hundreds of wines to samples, chat with winery owners like Amber Lee of J. Lohr Vineyards in San Jose, CA and enjoy the live jazz being played by JT Fedrick/Sax Groove.  Participating restaurants include:  Amber Rose, Carver’s, El Meson, Mamma DiSalvo’s The Oakwood Club, L’Auberge and fifteen more.  For the complete list, click here.

As you stroll through the tent, be sure and make some bids on the silent auction, which will feature gift baskets filled with art, theater tickets and restaurant gift certificates and even a weeks stay at a Lake Norris vacation cabin.  A live auction will get under way at about 3:45pm and some of the early highlights include a hideaway bar cabinet, donated by Bruning’s Wine Cellar, Chef Dinner’s and wine collectibles and verticals.

Not a wine drinker?  Then you may want to spend your time in the Beer Garden featuring Belgium favorites, Stella Artois, Leffe and Hoegaarden. Souvenir glasses will be available for just $2 each.

Proceeds from the event will benefit 13 arts organizations as well as individuals infected, affected and at risk of HIV/AIDS. This event is truly like none other in the Miami Valley.
