Do you want to get the maximum pleasure out of growing your own food? Do you want your children or grandchildren to know where their food comes from? If your answer is “yes” to either or both of these questions then you want to start your own plants from seed. By starting your own plants from seed hundreds of varieties not found at any garden center are available to choose from. Where to find seed, what materials you need, what are the environmental needs of seedlings, and how best to store seed will be covered.

soil blocking is recommended by organic farming expert Eliot Coleman as the best method for starting plants.
It eliminates the use of plastic trays for a more sustainable method as well as eliminating roots wrapping around the inside of pots.
we will also look at different trays and pots and grow lights as well.

Our teacher, Lisa Helm, is a Master Organic Gardener, Permaculture Certified and has studied small scale, year round regenerative vegetable production with some of the most successful farmers in the country. She has been a guest speaker at events including the National Community Garden Association Conference, the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association Conference The KY OAK Conference, the WA Tilth Conference and others. She founded Garden Station in 2008 and hosted workshops and EarthFest for as many as 5000 attendees there before the city sold the space to a developer. The hoophouses from Garden Station found a new home at Dayton Urban Grown Cooperative’s new training farm in downtown Dayton where they currently produce over 20K worth of vegetables annually on 1/10 of an acre. She is also working on writing a regenerative vegetable farmer training program to help increase the number of sustainable local farms in the area.
