Lunch N Learn: Montgomery Co. Jail
March 9, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
Does Montgomery County need a giant new jail?
The current County jail houses around 800 prisoners each day, double its intended capacity. The conditions are terrible and everyone in the justice system agrees that it needs to be fixed or replaced.
The County has hired a consultant to help it decide what should be done. An early draft of that consultant’s report recommends a new or renovated jail with 1200 beds- a 50% increase over current use.
Do we really need such a large jail? Could we instead have a smaller new jail and reform the criminal justice system to reduce incarceration? What kind of reforms would we need?
Dr. Zaria Davis, Senior Associate at the Pretrial Justice Institute, one of the premier organizations in the country doing research and advocacy on criminal justice reform. Dr. Davis will talk about criminal justice reforms that work to keep people safe and reduce incarceration.
