The Re-Imagining America: Dayton, Ohio initiative is offering a FREE Local Journalism Workshop for Daytonians interested in learning the skills of journalism and community reporting. Held over four weekly sessions in September and October, Workshop participants will be taught written and broadcast reporting by a team of Dayton-based reporters and journalism experts.

Sept. 23rd @ 7 PM – Workshop Session 2: Podcasting and audio reporting with Mary Evans (and Stephen Starr). Mary is a reporter who produces stories for WYSO and other outlets. She’ll be discussing why podcasting is a great vehicle for reporting and the challenges of working in audio. We’ll look at the basics of podcasting — technical training, equipment and how to find story ideas for radio/podcasting. With a 20-min Q&A.

Sept. 30th @ 7 PM – Workshop Session 3: Photojournalism with Steve Bennish (and Stephen Starr). We’ll look at how photojournalism has changed in the era of the smartphone, and discuss why images are just so important in news coverage today. We’ll also look at how to take shots that capture a moment — and can help sell your story to editors. Followed by a 20-min Q&A.

Oct. 7th @ 7 PM – Workshop session 4: Pitching story ideas and matching them to media outlets. Stephen will share some of his successful pitches which we’ll pick apart in detail. We’ll look at learning to think like an editor — and their readers — to ensure all our hard research work pays off.

Having learned the appropriate skills through the Workshop, we hope to then gather a small cohort of Re-Imagining America ‘Citizen Correspondents.’ In the coming months, these Dayton area residents will learn further core reporting skills and, we hope, dive deeper into the issues facing our community. Some of these stories — in written, podcast/audio and photojournalism form — will appear on the Re-Imagining America website and, where appropriate, in local, national and potentially international media outlets.

The Information Session, Workshop and Citizen Correspondents training will be hosted by Irish journalist and author Stephen Starr. Having reported from 16 countries including Syria and Turkey, Stephen moved to the Dayton area in 2018 and has since reported on local issues for National Geographic, the Guardian newspaper, the Irish Times, BBC News and others. Mary Evans, a returned citizen who recently graduated from Antioch College with a bachelor’s degree in the business of interdisciplinary media arts, will offer insights into reporting for audio, video and podcasting. She is the co-creator and producer of ReEntry Stories at WYSO FM, the lead audio producer for the Faces On The Train podcast, created by Felicia Chappelle, and the social media manager for Educate Incarcerated and Integrated Women. Steve Bennish, a 30-year veteran of daily newspaper reporting, will teach a workshop session on photojournalism. Steve’s produced three photo books about life in Dayton – “Scrappers,” “A City of Neighbors,” and “Parallel Universe.” In 2016 he received a First Place from Leica Camera for his street photography. He uses digital and film cameras as well as iPhones for his work.
