Connections: Moments of Clarity Virtual Silent Auction
The Dana L. Wiley Gallery presents two simultaneous exhibitions in April that offer perspective on Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias.
Connections: Moments of Clarity brings together Dayton area artists and residents in memory care facilities to create paintings that spark connection and moments of clarity for persons living with Alzheimer’s or related dementias, while enabling families and friends in our community to find connections and moments of clarity with their loved ones.
The Darker Sooner brings the work of Dayton and Denver artist Karen Fisher exploring the impact of Alzheimer’s and related dementias on people and society through fourteen mixed media pieces. Her exhibition takes its title from the poem by Catherine Wing, Associate Professor of English, Kent State University.
The exhibition concepts came to gallery owners Dana Wiley and Gary Hinsche from artist Karen Fisher who lives and works in both Dayton and Denver. Inspired by the Alzheimer’s Association’s nationwide program, Memories in the Making, she had discovered that painting with her father after his Alzheimer’s diagnosis helped maintain a close relationship with him even as his disease progressed. “For my dad and others, art can be an outlet for creative expression, sensory stimulation, an opportunity to reach outside their dementia, focus on who they once were and still are and communicate the stories and memories that arise during the painting process.”
Given their personal connections to Alzheimer’s, Dana and Gary were immediately interested in pursuing the exhibition. For 3-1/2 months, Karen along with local artists, Scott Gibbs and Rusty Harden, met with residents in their facilities for art sessions to create 8” x 8” watercolors paintings. Then, the Dana L. Wiley Gallery curated the residents’ work and paired 32 of the pieces with Dayton artists who will create an interpretation of their resident’s watercolor, working with the same 8” x 8” format in the medium of their choice.
The Dana L. Wiley Gallery will place the exhibition’s 34 paired works and three works donated by local artists into Virtual Silent Auction event on May 15th, 10am – 9pm.
All proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association Miami Valley Chapter in support of their work to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementias through brain health. Connections: Moments of Clarity is an official Walk to end Alzheimer’s Event.
On May 13th, a full preview of the artwork that will be auctioned off will be available on the Dana L. Wiley Gallery website. We ask that all participants register for the Virtual Silent Auction. No registration fee required.
