Artist in Training (AIT) Program:

The AIT program is an after school art program for teens in grades 7-12. Students will learn foundations o visual art skills while making art with a variety of materials and techniques. The collaborative environment in our studios allow students to forge friendships, build self confidence, and experience new perspectives while learning skills to make art. Students can opt to attend one day per week, two days, or all sessions. Students are welcome to join at any point in the year.

Classes meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:00pm-6:00pm.

All classes are led by TEJAS Director, artist Rebecca Sargent; MFA, University of Pennsylvania, BFA, Wright State University. Passionate about teaching art and making an impact on the community, Rebecca is a painter with 14 years of experience mentoring creative young artists.

Mondays: Drawing & Painting: Students will explore oil, acrylic, watercolor, charcoal, graphite and ink while learning about composition, sighting and measuring, drawing the 3D world accurately, personal expression, originality, material handling and content.  Mondays are also a perfect fit for students interested in developing the skills needed to build a portfolio.  Many students go on from this course into our Advanced Placement Studio Art Program.  Students will also be encouraged to participate in at least two art competitions and two exhibitions throughout the year.

Wednesdays: Mixed Media & Sculpture: Students will create their own mixed media and sculpture creations while exploring clay, paper mache, plaster, relief, carving, printmaking, photography, sculpting, and collage techniques.  Wednesdays are a perfect fit for students interested in trying out new materials and processes each week.

Fridays: Individual Projects & Community Art Projects: Time will be spent split during this studio time period between individual projects and community art projects, such as murals. Students will collaborate during the months of September & October on the creation of 15 large scale paintings that will be a part of a travelling visual awareness campaign and exhibition called: SOS: Signs of Suicide. For the rest of the year students will work with Allyson Paul, a OSU Graduate Student who has received a fellowship to work with students on developing a teen guided art project that will impact the community.
