Founded in 1812, Champagne Laurent-Perrier is one of the most distinguished family-owned Champagne Houses. Passion, creative boldness, free spirit and elegance through simplicity are the founding values of the House.
All you can eat Icelandic cod, chicken strips, fresh sausage (hot and regular), French fries, salad, cole slaw, cabbage and noodles, Joe’s famous deserts and as always…popcorn, ice cream, coffee, beer and soft drinks. Remember, Chef Joe and the crew makes everything from scratch so it is always fresh and delicious!
The first Western pasta was likely long, thin forms made in Sicily around the 12th century; till this day, spaghetti is the most common round-rod type of pasta and in Italian, “spaghetti” means “little lines.” However, the popularity of pasta only spread across the whole country of Italy after the establishment of pasta factories in the 19th century, substantially shortening the time needed for making dishes like spaghetti and enabling the mass production of pasta for the Italian market.

The Food Adventure Crew loves sharing monthly recipes and this January is no exception, as Jackie shares her guarded FRENCH ONION SOUP creation with HOMEMADE CROUTONS. We kick off the new year right with a favorite that most anyone will enjoy, a gourmet soup, with the warmth and comfort of mom’s cooked meals. Speaking of which, Jackie, a mom of two who loves cooking for her family. Heavily influenced by her childhood in upstate New York, her cooking styles specialize in Italian food, to desserts, to healthy choices.
Today we offer to you one of her favorite Holiday/Cold Weather winning recipes. Hopefully this will be one you use as “go to” in the future. Personalize the recipe and make your own magic.
As Jackie reminds us… “We are the music makers, we are the dreamers of dreams.” – Willy Wonka/Arthur O’Shaughenessy.
Without further delay, let’s cook some soup !
FRENCH ONION SOUP with HOMEMADE CROUTONS – as made by an Italian Food Adventurer:
for the FRENCH ONION SOUP You’ll need:
- 1lb bacon (cooked and crumbled)
- 2 tbs bacon fat reserved from the bacon (optional, but delightful!)
- ¼ c unsalted butter
- 1 large red onion, sliced thin
- 1 large yellow onion, sliced thin
- 1 large white onion, sliced thin
- 1 bunch scallions, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup dry white wine
- 10 cups stock (I use vegetable but you can also use chicken or beef)
- 1/4tsp hot pepper flakes
- ¼ tsp dry oregano
- ½ tsp fresh ground black pepper
- salt – optional. You don’t need much at all with the bacon and stock, so go easy if adding any and remember to taste as you go to avoid over salting!
- Croutons (homemade recipe to follow!) or a crusty baguette sliced
- Shredded cheese- mozzarella, Swiss, greyer are all great!
- In a large saucepan, fry bacon. Remove bacon and fat, but reserve 2 tbs of bacon fat. Crumble bacon when cooled.
- Over medium heat, melt butter then add onions and garlic. Stir frequently to deglaze the lovely bacon bits that are on the bottom of the saucepan!
- Once onions are soft, add wine and simmer for 10 minutes.
- Add stock and seasoning and continue to simmer on medium heat for approximately 30 minutes.
- Serve in deep soup bowls. Top with croutons, cheese and bacon!
- Bread, about 2 cups cut into 1-2 inch pieces
- Olive oil
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp fresh ground black pepper
- 1 tsp dried parsley
Toss bread with oil and seasonings and spread onto a large baking sheet. Bake at 300 (do not preheat oven) for about 20 minutes or until dry and crunchy!
There you have it – warmth and happiness in a bowl. Treat yourself this week and prepare a batch for the whole darn family. This recipe will cut right through this rainy, cold, wet weather and put you in a place of bliss.

Montessori School of Dayton
While the grand opening is scheduled for January 8th the high tech new concept store located at 5901 Far Hills Ave is doing a soft opening this week. The spot most recently housed Clark’s Pharmacy and before that was a Wendy’s restaurant. I stopped in at the new Dunkin’ today and was greeted by a painter, still doing some last minute touch ups on the newly renovated building.
Tuesday’s Grand Opening Celebration will run from 7-11am and will include gift card giveaways , the Dunkin’ pink carpet, the official ribbon cutting at 10am, photo opportunities with the Dunkin’ mascot and a chance to spin the prize wheel for sweet giveaways.
The 2,000 square foot space in Washington Township is the first new concept store in the Dayton market and just the 3rd in Ohio. With a crisp, clean look, gone is the plastic pink and orange decor of the old shops. Speaking of gone, so to is the “Donuts” part of the business name. Moving forward with just the “Dunkin” moniker, they will keep the familiar “DD” as still part of their company branding.
Inside a very friendly staff were proud to show off all the new equipment and innovations in the shop run by General Manager Gaston Herding, The highlight of which is the new innovative tap system allows them to consistently serve eight cold beverages such as coffees, iced teas, cold brew coffee and nitro infused cold brew coffee.
Josh(pictured right) talked me into sampling the Nitro Cold Brew with an added pump of Thin Mint flavoring and I have to admit as a now coffee drinker, I could see myself getting used to this little sweet caffeine buzz. One of the other great things about Dunkin’ is they serve their breakfast sandwiches all day long! No having to race the clock to make the cutoff time for breakfast like at some other fast food joints!
They showed off the new soft heat brewers, which they explained do a better job of keep the coffee at exactly the right temperature, which allows them to offer a fresh product more consistently. Something else they shared is that the new concept stores small coffee will now be 12 oz, vs the 10 oz that is served up at all the other locations. Each cup of coffee is now labeled when you order, which should help with accuracy on orders, especially when they are busy. All furniture is also moveable, so it’s easy to pull together seating for a coffee meeting. And staying with the high-tech concept, there is even a high top wireless charging table for your phones.
One of the other big changes is the chain’s double drive-thru, with one lane dedicated exclusively for mobile ordering, allowing customers who order ahead via the company’s mobile app to go straight thru the order ahead lane for quick pick up. The second lane is the traditional drive-thru, where you’ll order via a speaker.
Two large glass containers showcase the donuts and there is also an expanded grab and go section, allowing you to grab a drink or some coffee beans to go. You can pick up a box of Jo-to-Go for just $14.99, which holds a gallon of coffee, which is about 10 cups. I also found out that there is a Dunkin’ happy hour, from 2-6pm each day, where you can pick up a medium cappuccino or latte for just $2. Dunkin’ also offers a 20% military discount and a 10% senior citizen discount on all orders.
