Most of us are familiar with 'Will and Grace,' 'Ellen,' and even "Queer as Folk.' But, if you really want to celebrate the power of LGBT television icons, look no further than DATV, home of Harper's Bazzaroworld, and its iconic star Darryl Demure. Driven by a desire to bring drag, fun and frolic to television, Demure brought her idea to the powers that be at DATV. Originally, it was not well received. Thanks to an open-minded producer named KiKi, a pilot was made for the show that now hits 16 years of airtime. 'Our fans love the fact that as we mature in age, we remain vital.' No easy task for … [Read more...] about LGBT TV Icon Celebrates Sweet 16!

A quick update on one of the cool things happening in our community: Sure, it takes a lot more than a weekend to become a filmmaker. The best are always learning, exploring and growing. But for a great jumpstart to a filmmaking hobby, career, education - FilmDayton offers the Filmmaker Boot Camp, a two-day intensive experience where participants are the writers, directors, cast, crew and editors. Last weekend, eleven aspiring filmmakers joined FilmDayton instructors at DATV for this experience in filmmaking. On day one, they dove in with a mini-film school with workshops in visual style, … [Read more...] about Down the Path from Novice to Filmmaker
Editor’s note: The piece was submitted by Matthew Brassfield, a local filmmaker and the writer, director and producer of Baron Von Porkchop’s Terrifying Tales of the Macabre. I wrapped up my first article, Ohio Shock, at the beginning of the 80's and presented hosts like the Ghoul, Dr. Creep, Mad Daddy, Fritz The Nite Owl and many more. Now it's time to explore the next batch of hosts that kept the 80's to present day scary for Ohioians. In Ohio Shock we spoke about the Shock Package, a group of Universal Films that helped spawn the Horror Host genre into entertainment the whole … [Read more...] about Son of Ohio Shock: Part 2 of a History of Horror Hosting in the Buckeye State
Hello Everyone, Professor Charles Derry told me that THE DEVIL'S DOUBLE is a combination of SCARFACE and a Bette David melodrama (FYI - that's a compliment)...and my friend Maddi Breslin said that it was outstanding...and that she "could see it again." Unfortunately, the film did not perform well. Thursday will be your last chance to see THE DEVIL'S DOUBLE at THE NEON. Conversely, Martin Sheen's THE WAY (directed by son Emilio Estevez) had a great weekend! We were way above the national average for the film, and audiences are loving it. THE WAY is set to stick around … [Read more...] about MY AFTERNOONS WITH MARGUERITTE & Hot November Plans for THE NEON

In the fine tradition of late night local horror hosts like Dr. Creep and A. Ghastlee Ghoul, a new show called Baron Von Porkchop's Terrifying Tales of the Macabre is debuting on DATV Saturday, January 8th. Hosted by Baron Von Porkchop, the show will feature a film introduced by the cast and accompanied by skits throughout the evening. "We are so happy to bring the viewers a show that is very much in the classic style of a horror host program, filled with bad movies and funny segments. We are honored to follow in the big footsteps of Dr. Creep and A. Ghastlee Ghoul in the Dayton area," … [Read more...] about Baron VonPorkchop brings Terrifying Tales of the Macabre to DATV
Years ago, I worked for a general contractor and my job was to supervise the work being done at one of his job sites while he was away. I remember being fascinated by the carpenters whom - with extreme focus and spot-on precision with the hammer and nail - meticulously labored on the task before them, erecting the sturdy frame necessary for a strong structure. Freelance marketing consultant Monica McGee operates in similar fashion. She focuses on a goal, knocks it squarely on its head, then - like a certain Brooklyn-born hip-hop artist - moves on to the next one. I could say that … [Read more...] about DATV Program: All Things Marketing
