From the Bellies of Birds, Ink Drawings by Seth Wade

October 4, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

Local artist and educator, Seth Wade, will be exhibiting ink drawings in his solo show, “From the Bellies of Birds”, opening at Dutoit Gallery on October 4th, 2019.

Employing a process that evokes the spirit of Surrealism, Seth’s drawings gradually emerge from scribbles, allowing the composition and subject of each image to present itself rather than being predetermined. This results in drawings that feature shapes, objects, and narratives that retain a sense of mystery, even to the artist himself.

Seth is currently an adjunct professor of drawing at the University of Dayton, where he received his Bachelors of Fine Arts, and also teaches painting at Stiver’s School for the Arts. “From the Bellies of Birds” will be at Dutoit through October.

Scantlings

July 12, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

Dutoit Gallery is pleased to present Scantlings an exhibition of sculptural work by Eli Gfell.

The work in the exhibition, made from found and re-purposed building materials, is realized through intuitive processes and imperfect systems. Traditional notions of value, finish, and permanence are questioned through faux surfaces, forged gestures, and distortions in space and perspective.

Opening Reception: July 12th (second Friday), 6 – 9

Hours: by appointment, contact [email protected]

Remembrances: Recent Works by David Leach

June 7, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

David Leach, who received a B.A. from Bucknell University, and an M.F.A. from Ohio University, is an Emeritus Professor at Wright State University, where he taught art – primarily printmaking and drawing – from 1973 to 2003. His drawings and prints have been published in conjunction with poetry and prose on numerous occasions, and his work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library of Yale University, the Dayton Art Institute and the Cincinnati Museum of Art, among several other public and private collections.

The recent works in this exhibition are a continuation of the work in the 2018 Dutoit show titled Flora. They remain primarily linear abstractions with a slight shift towards shape. The palate remains limited, and the process remains intuitive. As the drawings derive mostly from memory rather than direct observation, “remembrances” captures the spirit of these works.

Latent Furnaces

March 9, 2019 By Lisa Grigsby

The Blue House is excited to present Latent Furnaces part of The Neon Heater Art Gallery’s curatorial project, The Temperature!

The Blue House Gallery welcomes curator Ian Breidenbach and Emily Jay from The Neon Heater. The Neon Heater is a artist run space in Findlay, OH. This exhibition, Latent Furnaces, comes from a curatorial project The Neon Heater has been executing  as a part of their seventh year exhibitions, titled The Temperature. This exhibition is one in a series of 26 exhibitions that span across the United States running between September 2018 and May of 2019.. A loose conceptual narrative will connect the exhibitions via a monthly framework that unfolds throughout the course of the year. The narrative is a critique of the Art world and capitalist art market, American nationalism and exceptionalism, and universalized Hollywood blockbusters. March’s monthly theme is Something Utopian. With this theme The Blue House will be hosting an exhibition titled Latent Furnaces featuring the works of Paige Früchtnicht-Ponchak and Steven Cottingham. We hope you’ll be able to make it out to see this new exciting portion of The Temperature Saturday March 9th!

From The Neon Heater:

In the fall of 2018, we will begin our seventh year of exhibitions, during which we will be trying something different.  The Neon Heater’s role will shift to include the curation of all of the exhibitions this year to maximize the number of artists  and spaces we can work with as well as the number of ideas we can explore. We’re looking at these nine months (Sept ’18 – May ’19) as one long exhibition called “The Temperature”. Using the context and aesthetics of the artists’ work, we will take the temperature of the art world and the socio-political climate. As current issues and recent elections have shifted the landscape, we ask: “who are we now, what is our role as artists?”

With this year, we’re hoping to provide an answer, or maybe better yet, ask a lot more questions.

We want to create connections between artists and artworks, curating themed exhibitions using the ideas and signifiers that the work brings with it. To connect all of the exhibitions, we’ll be creating a loose conceptual narrative that will unfold throughout the run of The Temperature.

Exhibition Opens March 9th 6-9pm at The Blue House Gallery, 3325 Catalpa Drive, Dayton, Ohio 45405. Exhibition will run March 9th-March 31st. The BLue House is open every Friday from 4-6 for open hours during exhibitions. For more information feel free to contact The Blue House at [email protected] or by phone at 937-985-9252.

Rosewood Gallery presents “Arcetypes” & “Heritage Habitats”

November 29, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Opening November 26 and running through December 28 the Rosewood Gallery is pleased to host two engaging exhibitions.  In one of the galleries artist Connie R Campbell exhibits her sculptures that are made with a sense of strength and tension.  She structures aluminum, copper, and wood into pieces of art that reference animal skeletons and animal snares.

In the second gallery Ginger Owen-Murakami and Vicki VanAmeyden have come together to create the installation, Heritage Habitats. In this show they have framed the work around nostalgia and memory where these Michigan artists have created physical spaces where as they explain in their artist statement “the viewer may reference their own memories and experiences to engage with the work.”

Artists’ reception Thursday November 29, 6-8pm.  The event is free and open to the public.

Worries Bash

November 10, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Caitlin Foley and Misha Rabinovich

Saturday November 10th 6 to 9pm at The Blue House Gallery

Worries Bash is a participatory installation consisting of recorded worries from hundreds of people recorded presented as part of a continuous audio portrait emanating from fragile papier-mâché sculptures. When attendees tap or hit the sculpture a worry will come into focus so that it can be heard clearly before again submerging into an abstract murmur. Worries Bash culminates with a ceremonial destruction of the sculptures as a means to share and release worries. This pairing of worries with celebration aims to provide some insight into the complexities of the anxieties we live with. Can the destruction of these interactive worry vessels create space for clarity?

Would you like to become part of the exhibition and installation? Record your worries at https://worries.io/ and join in!

For more information about the artist and Hyperallergic check out the link https://hyperallergic.com/437508/caitlin-foley-misha-rabinovich-science-art/

Caitlin & Misha create artworks which play with culturally relevant, yet sometimes utopic examples of sharing communities, livable ecologies, and the transmutation of waste. They employ traditional drawing, design, and sculptural techniques within a contemporary framework of interactive media and participatory installation. Among other things they create installations, games, and happenings where audience participation is a key component of the work and its message. Caitlin is an art consultant and curator and Misha is an Assistant Professor of Interactive Media at UMass Lowell.
