Thinking of starting a garden this season?
Learn some Vegetable Gardening Basics to get you off to a good start!
We’ll cover planning your space, types of beds or containers, healthy soil, composting, seed starting, planting techniques including companions, interplanting and crop rotation. You’ll learn the difference between hybrids, GMO, heirlooms and organic seeds; perennials and annuals. We will touch on watering or irrigation systems, pest and disease management and why organic methods are important. Even if you are an experienced gardener, I bet you learn something new in this very thorough workshop!
Our teacher, Lisa Helm, is a Master Organic Gardener and Permaculture Certified and has been a guest speaker at events including the National Community Garden Association Conference and the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association Conference. She founded Garden Station in 2008 and hosted workshops and EarthFest for as many as 5000 attendees there before the city sold the space to a developer. The hoophouses from Garden Station found a new home at Dayton Urban Grown Cooperative’s new training farm in downtown Dayton. She is currently working on writing a regenerative vegetable farmer training program to help increase the number of sustainable local farms in the area.
