Maxwell with Ledisi and Leela James at Fraze Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 7:00 PM
Maxwell has artfully managed to transfix music lovers for more than two decades, releasing 4 studio albums, all in his own time – all duly anointed as classics. Now, the Brooklyn-born soul legend returns with his 5th album, BlackSUMMERS’night, the long-awaited second installment of his trailblazing trilogy, a powerful reminder that great music really is about more than moving the twitter needle.
Maxwell’s reentry into the pop orbit straddles but never strains the fertile groundwork he’s already laid as an R&B/soul pioneer. His seminal 1996 debut album, Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, which the New York Times credited for ‘turning away gangsta’ machismo to reclaim the utopian spirit of 70s soul…’has been enthusiastically re-celebrated recently in an avalanche of commemorative articles marking the 20th anniversary of the genre spawning debut.
Ledisi started a six-member band in the 1990s, with the group’s title, Anibade, originating from her middle name. Ultimately, Ledisi pursued a solo career and released a heavily jazz-influenced independent album, Soulsinger: The Revival, in 2000 on her own label, LeSun Records. Her second studio album, Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue, was also independently released in 2002. Ledisi eventually signed with the Verve Forecast label which released her third album, Lost & Found, in 2007. Since beginning her solo career, Ledisi has become one of the most critically acclaimed R&B female vocalists and has earned nine Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist in 2008.
Leela James speaks the truth. Never mind hype or spectacle. The acclaimed recording artist appreciates the eternal qualities of an undeniable star — raw talent, musical substance and an authentic voice that’s timeless. All of which are embodied on Leela James’ fifth studio album Fall For You, an album highlighted by the soulful “Say That” featuring Anthony Hamilton, and her heartfelt single “Fall For You.” Her latest album, Did It For Love, will be released Spring 2017.
