Jimi Hendrix’ guitar inspires local playwright

“Jimi’s Guitar,” a new comedy by acclaimed playwright Dan Owens will debut in a reading at the Dayton Theatre Guild in the Oregon district at 430 Wayne Avenue on September 15 at 2 pm. When two brothers are called home for their ailing father’s birthday, a battle ensues for who will inherit a highly valued original guitar, played and owned by musical legend Jimi Hendrix. Its comedy all around as old grievances, past slights, and new fears fuel the scheming and conspiracies to win Jimi’s guitar. If you enjoy a good comedy and the excitement and satisfaction of exploring new work and new writers, please join the Ohio Playwrights Circle to hear “Jimi’s Guitar” and share your feedback with the author after the reading. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

The reading is presented by the Ohio Playwrighters Circle, a project of the American ArtWorks Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) not for profit corporation. OPC is hosted in Dayton by the Human Race Theatre Company & The Dayton Theatre Guild.

Dan Owens is a Dayton resident who’s work as been performed on stages in New York, Chicago and Seattle. Village Voice theatre critic Michael Feingold wrote, “Owens is a cunning and complex writer…” His credits include, “Hello Darlin’s”, a one woman show about the legendary Black comedienne Jackie “Moms” Mabley. His two act play, “Mutambi and Lindstrom” was produced at the 15th Annual National Black Theater Festival in North Carolina and was later performed in a reading with stage, screen and theatre actor John Amos in a title role. While living in New York City, Mr. Owens had his work produced by The New Federal Theater, The Frederick Douglass Creative Arts Center, The Negro Ensemble, The George Street Playhouse in New Jersey and The Westport Summer Playhouse in Connecticut. He was a two time participant in the Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference in Connecticut and was the recipient of a Rockefeller Grant for Playwrighting.
