A New Time. A New Jerusalem. A New Vision.
Epiphany Players Drama Ministry Re-imagines Jesus Christ Superstar for Modern Times
The Epiphany Players Drama Ministry will present its 27th summer musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, July 13-15 and 20-22 at 7:30 p.m., and July 16 and 23 at 2:30 p.m. Performances will be held at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 6430 Far Hills Avenue, Centerville, OH, 45459. Featuring the talents of more than sixty local student and adult actors, the Epiphany production re-imagines the legendary rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice for our modern times. Set in New York City in 2017 against the backdrop of social, political and spiritual upheaval, a prophet emerges to lead the way – but his methods and message are nothing like they expected. Jesus’ meteor-like rise in renown provides a platform for Judas to question the enlightened motives behind the Messiah’s seemingly radical approach. When questions lead to betrayal, Christ’s final days are dramatized with emotional intensity and explosive theatricality. Propelled by a stirring musical score – by turns driving and majestic, satirical and tender – Jesus Christ Superstar dares to ask, “What would the world do if Jesus came today?”
“Every summer, we are in awe of the talented performers who audition and ultimately become our cast for the show,” said Megan Wean Sears, director and choreographer. “And this year is no exception. The cast challenges and inspires me daily. We can’t wait to share our story with you!”
Sears added, “Superstar has been a staple of American musical theatre and rock audiences for more than three decades. People know this score by heart. And so, to take a piece that is revered by so many fans and re-imagine it is a daunting task. Yet I can think of no other program than the nearly thirty-year-old Epiphany Drama Ministry to be better equipped to take on the task of introducing this rock opera to contemporary audiences.”
For more than twenty-five years, the Epiphany Players Drama Ministry has given families a forum for sharing the core teachings of Christ through theater, bringing people together to support Epiphany Lutheran Church’s mission to love Jesus by serving others. Community members of nearly any age can audition for the summer musical, meaning families can rehearse and perform together, creating bonds that last a lifetime.
The Epiphany Players Drama Ministry supports a charity every summer through a portion of the musical’s proceeds. This summer, the Epiphany Pantry will be the recipient of those charitable offerings. The Pantry serves more than five thousand people every year, acting as an emergency source of help for those in need. For the nearly thirty percent of households with children going hungry every day in the greater Dayton area, the food, clothing and household items provided by the Epiphany Pantry are invaluable. The Pantry relies on community financial support, donations and volunteers to continue providing the necessary resources to those in need.
