Meet the Speakers

Dr. Mae Jemison

  • First African American Woman in Space
  • Founder and President, the Jemison Group and BioSentient Corp, two medical technology companies
  • Currently Leading 100 Year Starship to assure human interstellar space travel to another star within the next century
  • Inductee National Women’s Hall of Fame & International Space Hall of Fame

Dr. Mae Jemison served six years as a NASA astronaut. She is an icon of the women’s rights and civil rights movement, inducted into both the National Women’s Hall of Fame (1993) and the International Space Hall of Fame (2004). Dr. Jemison was the first woman of color in the world to go into space. After NASA, she began teaching at universities like Dartmouth College and Cornell University and founded research groups to continue the development of scientific knowledge. Since 2012, she has led the 100 Year Starship project, which researches ways to design and fund a spacecraft to take humans to another star within 100 years. She is a doctor, a dancer and astronaut, and holds nine doctoral degrees in the humanities, science and engineering.

Roni’s most important responsibility is to develop the female leaders of tomorrow by providing girls with leadership and learning experiences that encourage them to: 1) discover themselves and their passions; 2) connect with others, both locally and globally; and 3) take action to make the world a better place. During her many years in the Girl Scouting movement, which began when she joined Girl Scouts in her childhood and spans to her present role as CEO of the sixth largest Girl Scout council in the nation, Roni has contributed to the positive development and success of millions of girls through her leadership, vision, and passion for helping others. As CEO, Roni effectively manages GSWO, which is one of the largest and most successful Girl Scout councils in the nation. Under her leadership and guidance, 150+ staff members and 11,000+ volunteers serve nearly 40,000 girls in 32 counties in western Ohio and southeastern Indiana every year.
