The Dayton Correctional Institution (DCI) Women’s Peer Mediation Program is the first of its kind in the region designed to help reduce conflict in a prison setting. The program exposes women to conflict management skills with more than 60 hours of on-going training to help them learn effective ways to communicate during conflict. The training also will help women have new tools they can use to engage with others, including their families, as they rebuild their lives and return to their communities. Since 2016, the Dayton Mediation Center has trained more than 30 incarcerated women in the skills of Transformative Mediation. DCI mediators assist their peers self-manage conflict constructively in mediation while also learning skills that help improve communication and reduce tension.
Proceeds from past fundraisers have supported providing training materials for peer mediators, having an on-site staff person to manage the program, and the creation of a short film which can be viewed our online at www.daytonmediationcenter.org/prisonpeermediation.
