The Dayton Playhouse will skate into 2017 with the campy, outrageous, musical comedy, Xanadu, with book by Douglas Carter Beane, music and lyrics by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar. Opening night is January 20 and performances will run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through February 5. Friday and Saturday start times are 8 pm and Sundays start at 2 PM. The Dayton Playhouse is located at 1301 E. Siebenthaler Ave, Dayton, Ohio 45414. The play is being directed by Tina McPhearson, with musical director, Judy Mansky, and choreographer, Annette Looper. Set design by Chris “Red” Newman.
Slap on your roller skates, pump up the glitter, and get hip to the muses in Xanadu, the laugh-out-loud musical stage adaptation of the 1980 film. Xanadu follows Clio, the lovely and precocious Greek muse who decides to put on some roller skates, legwarmers, and an Australian accent in order to help Sonny Malone, a chalk artist with half a brain and a heart of gold, rediscover his own creativity. With both help and hindrance from the other muses — and from a clarinetist-turned-real estate mogul named Danny Maguire — Sonny and Clio work to rebuild their “apex of the arts”: a roller disco. Xanadu is the rare musical with a big heart, an even bigger funny bone, and a tongue stuck firmly in its cheek.
The cast of Xanadu includes: Desmond Thomas as Sonny Malone, Ellie Krug as Kira, Amy Askins as Melponeme, Tamar Fishbein as Calliope, Adee McFarland as Euterpe, Shanna Camacho as Erato, John Nussbaum as Thalia, Richard Waldeck as Terpsicore, and David Shough as Danny McGuire.
Tickets for the production are available at www.daytonplayhouse.com. The cost is $18 for adults and $16 for seniors, students and military. Tickets may also be purchased through the box office at 937-424-8477. Messages may be left at any time and calls will be returned.
